Enemies of Excellence #3: Avoiding Burnout

We’ve been talking about the Enemies of Excellence—the pitfalls that can derail our best efforts and keep us from bringing our God-given dreams to life. In this third installment, let’s look at burnout. It often creeps in when we get so consumed with achieving “excellence” that we lose sight of pacing, rest, and the essential rhythms that sustain us over the long haul.

Abraham’s Example of Sustainable Growth

If you’re familiar with the story of Abraham in Genesis 12, God gave him an incredible promise: “I will make you into a great nation.” That’s epic! Yet Abraham didn’t race at breakneck speed to see it fulfilled. Instead, he traveled south by stages.

That phrase—by stages—is a powerful antidote to burnout. It reminds us that big visions can (and should) unfold over time, giving us space to breathe, recalibrate, and keep our eyes on God’s leading rather than our own frantic pace.

1. Pacing: The Cure for Overdrive

Burnout happens when we push too far, too fast, for too long. Like climbers tackling Mount Everest, we need regular base camps—points where we rest, reflect, and celebrate progress.

  • Set Realistic Milestones
A clear roadmap helps you avoid exhaustion. Identify short-term wins before tackling the next Summit.
  • Take Deliberate Rest Stops
Abraham built altars along the way to worship and reconnect with God. Today, that might look like scheduling regular prayer retreats or simply pausing each week to assess what’s working—and what isn’t.
  • Adapt as You Move
Be ready to shift gears. The way you started might not be the way you need to continue. Avoid burnout by staying flexible and open to God’s guidance in each new season.

2. Seasons & Capacity: The Foundation for Sustainable Excellence

Burnout often occurs when we ignore the reality of seasons. Ecclesiastes 3 reminds us that not every season is meant for full-on growth. Sometimes we need to shore up our resources, build our team, or develop new skills.

  • Identify Your Season
Are you planting, watering, or harvesting? Misaligning your efforts to the wrong season leads to wasted energy—and eventually, burnout.
  • Build Capacity Gradually
Don’t expect yourself (or your team) to handle tomorrow’s demands with today’s capacity. Invest in training, relationships, and systems so you’re equipped for the next level.
  • Guard Your Energy
Burnout sets in when we take on too much without refilling our tanks. Recognize the warning signs—fatigue, irritability, or detachment—and create margin before it’s too late.

3. Faith-Filled Vision Meets Wise Stewardship

Being excellent for God’s glory doesn’t mean running ourselves ragged. Instead, it’s a balance: reach for the stars without betting the farm. Faith and wisdom are partners, not enemies.

  • Leverage a Bold Vision
It’s inspiring to dream big; God clearly has no problem casting large visions, as He did for Abraham. But big visions call for intentional steps.
  • Count the Cost
Jesus spoke of counting the cost before we build (Luke 14:28). That’s a practical reminder to ensure your finances, relationships, and personal stamina won’t implode under the weight of your ambitions.
  • Build a Support Network
None of us are meant to carry these dreams alone. Recruit the people who will help you strategize, troubleshoot, and pray you through each stage.

Overcoming Burnout: Putting It All Together

Burnout is a stealthy enemy of excellence, creeping in when we stretch too far and forget to refuel. But we can fight back by following Abraham’s lead:

  1. Move by Stages – Don’t try to conquer everything at once.
  2. Embrace Each Season – Know what time it is in your journey (plant, water, or harvest).
  3. Stay Faithful & Steady – Dream big while trusting God’s timing and wisdom.

Reflection Questions

  • Which stage are you in right now—planting, watering, or harvesting?
  • How could you create a rest stop or mini “altar” this week to recalibrate?
  • Do you have the right balance of bold vision and calculated steps?

Let’s remember: Burnout might be an enemy of excellence, but it doesn’t have to take us down. When we slow our pace, honor our seasons, and keep our eyes on God’s promise, we can build something extraordinary—one sustainable step at a time.
